Why This Calculator Shows More Than One Number
“Ideal body weight” is not one universally agreed number. Historical formulas such as Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi were developed for different clinical or nutritional purposes and use different constants. Showing them side by side is more transparent than pretending one formula is exact for every person.
This tool also calculates the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height. That range is usually more useful for general adult wellness because it shows a band rather than a single target.
The four formulas used
Devine: commonly cited in clinical settings and originally developed in the context of medication dosing. Robinson and Miller: later height-based alternatives. Hamwi: another long-used clinical estimate. All are rough population formulas and do not directly measure body fat, muscle mass or frame size.
South Asian context
People in South Asia may experience metabolic risk at lower BMI values, so weight should not be interpreted in isolation. Waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose, activity level, family history and medical advice can all add context.
Common Questions About Ideal Weight in United Kingdom
What is the best ideal-weight formula?
No single formula is best for everyone. For general wellness, the BMI-based range can be easier to interpret because it gives a range. The individual formulas are useful for comparison and historical context.
Why do the results differ by a few kilograms?
Each equation uses different starting values and different kilograms-per-inch adjustments. A small spread between formulas is normal and demonstrates why “ideal weight” should be treated as an estimate.
Does age change ideal weight?
These classic formulas are based mainly on height and sex, not age. In real life, muscle mass, bone density, health conditions and activity can change with age, which is another reason not to treat the output as a precise target.
